| Abstract: | The present study focuses on analyzing the social and cultural meanings rooted in the
practices of construction and ways of inhabiting vernacular houses in the localities of Cuenca
and Santa Isabel. The research is based on a qualitative approach with an ethnographic
design that employs data collection techniques such as semi-structured interviews and non-
participant observation. The results obtained reveal that construction practices and techniques
are inherently imbued with social and cultural meanings, as the construction process becomes
a space where social relationships intertwine, and both traditions and cultural knowledge
inherited from the locality are applied. Furthermore, it has been found that ways of inhabiting
acquire meaning through the relationship of individuals with their built environment and the
experiences they undergo in that space. Based on these results, it was concluded that
vernacular houses transcend their material focus to become constructions that encapsulate a
set of meanings, both in their construction process and in their way of being inhabited by those
who build and inhabit them. This knowledge can have a profound impact on the generation of
new knowledge, as it would significantly contribute to future research that integrates the social
and cultural perspective into the analysis of constructions and buildings. |
| Description: | El presente estudio se centra en analizar los significados sociales y culturales arraigados en
las prácticas de construcción y formas de habitar las viviendas vernáculas en las localidades
de Cuenca y Santa Isabel. La investigación se basa en un enfoque cualitativo con un diseño
etnográfico que emplea técnicas de recopilación de datos como entrevistas
semiestructuradas y observación no participante. Los resultados obtenidos revelan que las
prácticas y técnicas de construcción están intrínsecamente impregnadas de significados
sociales y culturales, ya que el proceso constructivo se convierte en un espacio donde se
entrelazan las relaciones sociales y se aplican tanto tradiciones como saberes culturales
heredados de la localidad. Asimismo, se ha encontrado que las formas de habitar adquieren
significado a través de la relación de los individuos con su entorno construido y las
experiencias que experimentan en dicho espacio. A partir de estos resultados, se concluyó
que las viviendas vernáculas trascienden su enfoque material para convertirse en
construcciones que encapsulan un conjunto de significados, tanto en su proceso de
construcción como en su forma de habitar por quienes la construyen y habitan. Este
conocimiento puede tener un impacto trascendental en la generación de nuevos
conocimientos, ya que contribuiría de manera significativa a futuras investigaciones que
integren la perspectiva social y cultural en el análisis de las construcciones y edificaciones. |
