| Abstract: | Post COVID-19 syndrome, according to the WHO, is a disease that occurs in individuals with
a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, usually within three months from its onset. It is
characterized by persistent clinical manifestations related to the sensory organs. The
objective of this review is to determine the Post COVID-19 symptoms in the orofacial region
in Latin America with emphasis on the Andean region. A literature review was conducted
based on publications from 2020 to 2022, using several digital databases, including
PubMed, Latindex, and Google Scholar. After applying an inclusion and exclusion criteria, 24
articles were selected for the analysis of Post COVID-19 symptoms in the Andean region.
The most common manifestations reported were fatigue, myalgia, and headaches. In
regards to the orofacial region, the main symptoms included dysgeusia, anosmia, and to a
lesser extent, tinnitus, and xerostomia. The symptoms with the highest prevalence withing
the Post COVID-19 syndrome were dysgeusia, hypogeusia, and ageusia as well as
anosmia, which were among the most frequent in the orofacial region. Visual disturbances
such as red eye and vision loss were also reported, as well as minor alterations of the oral
mucosa. These conditions are important and have persistent symptoms, requiring further
studies on the subject. A thorough medical history is recommended to identify specific
symptoms and signs in Post COVID-19 patients. |
| Resumen : | El síndrome Post COVID-19 según la OMS, es una enfermedad que ocurre en personas
que tienen antecedentes de infección por SARS-CoV-2, generalmente dentro de los tres
meses desde su inicio; se caracteriza por manifestaciones clínicas persistentes
relacionadas con los órganos de los sentidos. El objetivo de esta revisión es determinar los
síntomas Post COVID-19 en la región orofacial a nivel de Latinoamérica, con énfasis en la
región andina. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en base a publicaciones en un periodo
comprendido entre el año 2020 y 2022, utilizando varias bases digitales, siendo las
principales PubMEd, Latindex y Google Scholar. Después de aplicar criterios de inclusión y
exclusión se seleccionaron 24 artículos para el análisis de los síntomas Post COVID-19 en
la región andina. Reportando las manifestaciones más comunes: fatiga, mialgias y cefalea y
en cuanto a la región orofacial los principales síntomas como disgeusia, anosmia y en
menor porcentaje tinnitus, xerostomía. Los síntomas con mayor prevalencia dentro del
síndrome Post COVID-19 son disgeusia, hipogeusia y ageusia, así como también la
anosmia, encontrándose dentro de los más frecuentes a nivel de la región orofacial.
También se reportaron síntomas de alteraciones visuales como ojo rojo y pérdida de la
visión, y en menor porcentaje alteraciones de la mucosa oral, estas afecciones son
síntomas importantes y persistentes por lo que se necesitan más estudios sobre este tema.
Se recomienda realizar una historia clínica minuciosa para identificar síntomas y signos
específicos en pacientes Post COVID-19. |
