Abstract
Objective: the aim of this review was to analyse the existing literature and to know exactly the anatomical, histological, and
physiological characteristics of the parotid gland. Materials and methods: for this review a search was made in electronic bases
such as: Embase, Latin America and the Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), LIVIVO, PubMed (including Medline), Ovid,
Science Direct, Scopus and Cochrane Library, with publication year from 2014 to 2020. Results: 1373 articles were identified,
of which after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 were included in the analysis. Conclusions: the parotid gland
contributes with 45% of saliva, which intervenes in essential functions such as: digestion, lubrication and protection of tissues
in the oral cavity; therefore, it is important to know it, which facilitates the recognition of symptoms or signs related to the
dysfunction of this gland
Resumen
bjetivo: el objetivo de esta revisión fue analizar la literatura existente y conocer con exactitud las características anatómicas, histológicas y fisiológicas de la glándula parótida. Materiales y métodos: para esta revisión se realizó una búsqueda en bases electrónicas como: Embase, América Latina y el Caribe Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS), LIVIVO, PubMed (incluyendo Medline), Ovid, Science Direct, Scopus y Biblioteca Cochrane, con año de publicación desde 2014 hasta el presente año 2020. Resultados: se identificaron 1373 artículos, de los cuales después de aplicar los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, se incluyeron 16 en el análisis. Conclusión: la glándula parótida aporta 45% de saliva, la cual interviene en funciones esenciales como es: la digestión, lubricación y protección de tejidos de la cavidad bucal; por lo que, es importante el conocimiento de esta que facilita el reconocimiento de síntomas o signos relacionados con la disfunción de esta glándula
