Abstract: | Background: Vitamin D is a steroid synthesized in the skin thanks to sunlight and
obtained by food consumption. Various studies associate deficient levels of vitamin D
with diabetes; therefore, attempts have been made to verify its relationship with
Diabetes and BMI. Currently, diabetes mellitus is an important health problem whose
prevalence is increasing.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with type
2 diabetes and its relationship with BMI in patients at the Santa Inés hospital.
Methodology: A cross-sectional analytical study was carried out in patients with type
2 diabetes at the Santa Inés Hospital, Cuenca in the period May 2020 - September
2021. The universe was 210 patients, and the sample was 136. The collection of
information was obtained with an anonymized database, data was tabulated in Excel
2020 and SPSS v21. Descriptive tables with percentages and frequencies were
presented, in addition, the chi square formula and cross tables were used to associate
variables.
Results: A total of 136 patients were registered, of which 61% are adults, 83.82% are
female, 63.97% had adequate levels of glycosylated hemoglobin with a percentage of
overweight according to BMI of 48.53 %, and a vitamin D deficiency of 75%.
Conclusions: It was evidenced that there is a prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in
patients with type 2 diabetes who have a BMI higher than normal, however, a
statistically significant association between these variables could not be established. |
variables. |
