Abstract

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a major problem for public health worldwide due to the millions of lives that currently suffer from it. The objective of this study is to identify the knowledge about HIV and sexual practices in students from first to fifth year of the Medicine School of the University of Cuenca. 2021; This is an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study to be carried out on 1091 students with a sample of 215. The selection was random, using surveys, answered by self-filling on an electronic device. The data obtained was tabulated using Excel 2016 and SPSS v22, the data was presented in simple and multiple frequency tables, contingency tables. RESULTS: 57% of participants are women, 92.1% are single, 7% are bisexual and 4.6% homosexual, 50.7% do not come from public schools. 64.7% were trained on HIV; Among the routes of HIV transmission, 2.8% were attributed to kisses, 0.9% consider washing the genitals after sexual intercourse and a healthy diet to be factors that reduce contagion, 3.3% practice anal sex, 6.9% have had more than 10 sexual partners. 18% have had an STI; 1 out of 5 students has the perception of being at risk of contracting HIV. CONCLUSIONS: All the students do not have accurate knowledge about HIV; Most of them have had sexual intercourse with a greater propensity for the vaginal route, but with a notable value for the anal route; In addition, it was seen that the use of condoms is a protective factor.
