| Abstract: | At the beginning of the 20th century, in Latin America a rupture emerged among the
ideologies of that time, which led to social transformations in favor of children. As a result,
these subjects are recognized, who had been hidden and relegated. In this way, this research
paper aims to analyze the characteristics of the State and the Church´s representation of
childhood, and the way in which they are perceived by families, focused on the urban section
of Cuenca city, during 1900 to 1950. In order to do this, a historical research methodology is
conducted, which allows the understanding of mentalities and their influence on social
dynamics. Primary sources include the First Code of Minors, Ecclesiastical Bulletins,
Archives and literary novels: Los hijos de Cuesta y Cuesta, Sal y Chorro Cañamazo de G.H.
Bush. All of them were focused on the time of the study. Consequently, it can be observed
that the changes of modernity and the conflict of the secularism of education, promoted by
the Constitution of 1906, generated a control for social hegemony influenced by the two
institutions. Therefore, the childhood category was positioned in these transformations, from
which a model of romantic childhood linked to a character of innocence and dependence was
promoted, either for the protection of the spirit or the body, since the "future" of the country
would depend on them. |
| Description: | A principios del siglo XX, en América Latina se da una ruptura dentro de las mentalidades
de la época, que deriva en transformaciones sociales en pro de los infantes. Como resultado,
se reconoce a estos sujetos, que habían sido relegados e invisibilizados. De tal forma, la
presente investigación se concentra en analizar las características en la representación de la
infancia desde el Estado y la Iglesia, y la manera en la que son receptadas por las familias,
centrada en la parte urbana de Cuenca, durante los años de 1900 a 1950. Para ello, se hace
uso de la metodología de investigación histórica, que permite comprender las mentalidades
y su influencia en las dinámicas sociales. Como fuentes primarias se tiene al primer Código
de Menores, boletines eclesiásticos, archivos y novelas literarias: Los hijos de Cuesta y
Cuesta, Sal y Chorro Cañamazo de G.H. Mata, que pertenecen al contexto de estudio. En
consecuencia, se puede observar que los cambios de la modernidad y el conflicto de la
laicidad de la educación, promovido por la Constitución de 1906, generaron un control por
la hegemonía social por parte de las dos instituciones. Por lo tanto, la categoría infancia se
posicionó en estas transformaciones, desde donde se impulsó un modelo de la niñez
romántica vinculada a un carácter de inocencia y dependencia, ya sea para protección del
espíritu o del cuerpo, pues de ellos dependería el «futuro» del país. |
