| Abstract: | Objective: The objective is to determine the prevalence of the degenerative lumbar disease, diagnosed by magnetic resonance in patients of the Hospital “José Carrasco Arteaga”. January - December, 2011.
Methods and Material: It was realized a retrospective transversal study, to patients who went to the hospital “José Carrasco Arteaga”, to realized the lumbar spine Magnetic Resonance exam in during the period between January to December of 2011. It was worked with a universe of 864 patients, the pattern was propositional and it was referred to whole universe.
Results: According to the analysis of the data, according to the radiological report, it was observed that 789 patients ,who represents 91,3 %, shows a Lumbar Degenerative disc disease, being 51,2% men and 48,8% women. The 5.8% was reported as a normal research. The average age was 50 years old.
In relation to the BMI, of the 422 female patients, states that 51,5% has a normal BMI, 40,6% overweight. Of the 442 of male patients, states that 46, 6% has a normal BMI, 47, 5% has overweight.
According to the patients with pathology, it was possible to observe according to herniated material, amount 77% presents protrusion. The most common location on a vertebra was Posterior with 74.52%. The lumbar space more affected was L4-L5 y L5-S1, with 28,9%
Conclusion: At the end of this research we can determine the prevalence of Lumbar Degenerative disc disease, which is high, and its diagnosis was possible thanks to the examination of magnetic resonance imaging.

| Resumen : | Se realizó un estudio Transversal Retrospectivo, en los pacientes que acudieron al Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga , a realizarse el examen de Resonancia Magnética, de Columna Lumbar, en el periodo comprendido entre Enero-Diciembre 2011. Se trabajó con un universo conformado por 864 pacientes, la muestra fue propositiva y correspondió al universo. Resultado: Según el análisis de los datos, de acuerdo al informe radiológico se observó que 789 pacientes que corresponden al 91,3% presentó Discopatía Degenerativa Lumbar, siendo el 51,2% hombres y 48,8% mujeres. El 8,7% reportó un estudio normal. La edad promedio fue de 50 años. En relación al índice de masa corporal, de las 422 pacientes de sexo femenino, se estableció que 51,5% tienen un IMC normal, el 40,6% sobrepeso. De los 442 pacientes de sexo masculino, se tiene un IMC normal de 46,6%, el 47,5% tiene sobrepeso. |
