Abstract
This research analyzes the character of the prostitute, her voluntary memory, and her selfassertion in the Ecuadorian novel Las alcobas negras (1995) by Eugenia Viteri. This study
answers the following question: What are the strategies used by the character of the prostitute to
represent herself, remember and assert herself in Las alcobas negras? Regarding the theoretical
framework, the following categories are used: “prostitute” (Tubert, 2013 and Sanchis, n.d.),
“voluntary memory” (Bergson, 2006) and “self-affirmation” (Heim, 2006, as well as Arella,
Fernández, Nicolás and Vartabedian, 2007). Regarding the methodological framework, the
hermeneutical analysis is used from the perspective of Baeza (2002), which appeals to the fusion
of the text, the context and the interpretive act. This academic work addresses a new perspective
on the character of the prostitute. She is characterized as an individual who decides about her
body, her sexuality and for making prostitution a job and a source of obtaining resources

La presente investigación analiza al personaje de la prostituta, su memoria voluntaria y su
autoafirmación en la novela ecuatoriana Las alcobas negras (1995) de Eugenia Viteri. Este
estudio parte la siguiente pregunta: ¿Qué estrategias utiliza el personaje de la prostituta para
representarse, recordar y autoafirmarse en Las alcobas negras? En cuanto al marco teórico, se
usa las siguientes categorías: “prostituta” (Tubert, 2013 y Sanchis, s.f.), “memoria voluntaria”
(Bergson, 2006) y “autoafirmación” (Heim, 2006, así como Arella, Fernández, Nicolás y
Vartabedian, 2007). En lo referente al marco metodológico, se emplea el análisis hermenéutico
desde la perspectiva de Baeza (2002), mismo que apela a la fusión del texto, el contexto y el acto
interpretativo. Este trabajo académico aborda una nueva perspectiva del personaje prostituta. Esta
es caracterizada como individuo que decide sobre su cuerpo, su sexualidad y por hacer de la
prostitución un trabajo y una fuente de obtención de recursos
