Abstract
This monograph work is relevant in the educational field, specifically in the area of mathematics,
given that, it aims at demonstrating the importance of using the Taptana and Yupana as didactic
tools for learning addition and subtraction. To achieve this aim, different books, scientific articles,
assay, and other documents related to the topic were consulted and analyzed. Additionally, it was
conducted an interview to nine teachers about their perceptions and experiences about the
contribution of the Taptana and the Yupana to the learning of addition and subtraction, as well as
the contribution of such tools to other children’s learning. In the literature review it was found
that, indeed, both the Taptana and the Yupana benefit students’ learning of addition and
subtraction. In addition, the results of the interviews indicated that the Taptana and the Yupana
help to both, the learning of addition and subtraction and the learning of other mathematical skills.
Finally, it is concluded that, although these ancestral tools are not widely known, they continue to
be used by some teachers inside and outside the country.
Resumen
El presente trabajo monográfico es relevante en el ámbito educativo, específicamente en el
área de la matemática pues, pretende demostrar la importancia del uso de la Taptana y la Yupana
como herramientas didácticas para el aprendizaje de sumas y restas. Para alcanzar este objetivo se
consultaron y analizaron libros, artículos científicos, ensayos, y otros documentos relacionados con
el tema. Además, se realizó una entrevista a nueve docentes, sobre sus percepciones y experiencias
acerca de la contribución de la Taptana y la Yupana al aprendizaje de la suma y la resta, y sobre el
aporte de dichas herramientas a otros aprendizajes de los niños. En la revisión de literatura se
encontró que, efectivamente, tanto la Taptana como la Yupana favorecen al aprendizaje de la suma
y resta de los estudiantes. Además, en los resultados de las entrevistas indicaron que la Taptana y
la Yupana ayudan tanto al aprendizaje de la suma y resta como al aprendizaje de otras habilidades
matemáticas. Por último, se concluye que, aunque estas herramientas ancestrales no son
ampliamente conocidas, continúan empleándose por algunos docentes dentro y fuera del país.
