| Abstract: | Ecuador has one of the largest neo-
Gothic buildings in the American continent:
the Basilica of the National Vow, which was
conceived during the mandate of former
conservative president Gabriel García
Moreno in order to create a monument to
commemorate the country’s consecration to
the Sacred Heart. of Jesus; However, what
is ignored is that the temple has attributes
that show that close relationship between
the State and the Church of Ecuador.
Of those attributes, its strategic
location on the hill of San Juan stands out,
thus generating an imposing reading of the
building over Quito, which in turn leads to
the spatial relationship that the church seems
to have with the statue of the Virgen del
Panecillo, thus evidencing a kind of symbolic
takeover of the Ecuadorian capital. Added
to this is the adoption of the neo-Gothic
style for the building, which has undergone
alterations in its original design for various
reasons, including brief features, the lack of
interest by some governments in contributing
to the construction, for which the temple
has remained unfinished until today.
Due to the aforementioned, the
contribution of this document consists
of highlighting these and other aspects
that have not been mentioned or analyzed
by architecture theorists, which draws
attention due to the meaning that the temple
has not only for Ecuadorians but even
for the Catholic community worldwide. |
| Description: | El Ecuador posee una de las
edificaciones neogóticas más grandes del
continente americano: la Basílica del Voto
Nacional, la cual fue concebida durante el
mandato del ex presidente conservador
Gabriel García Moreno con el fin de crear
un monumento que conmemorase la
consagración del país al Sagrado Corazón de
Jesús; sin embargo, lo que se soslaya es que
el templo posee atributos que evidencian
aquella estrecha relación entre el Estado y la
Iglesia del Ecuador.
De aquellos atributos, destacan su
estratégico emplazamiento en la loma de
San Juan, generando con ello una lectura
imponente del edificio sobre Quito, lo que
a su vez desemboca en la relación espacial
que parece tener la iglesia con la estatua de
la Virgen del Panecillo, evidenciando así,
una suerte de toma simbólica de la capital
ecuatoriana. A esto, se le suma la adopción
del estilo neogótico para la edificación, el
cual ha sufrido alteraciones en su diseño
original por diversos motivos, entre los
que cabe mencionar a breves rasgos, el
desinterés por algunos gobiernos en aportar
a la construcción, por lo cual el templo ha
quedado inconcluso hasta la actualidad.
Por lo antes expuesto el aporte del
presente documento consiste en evidenciar
estos y otros aspectos que no han sido
mencionados ni analizados por teóricos
de la arquitectura, lo cual llama la atención
debido al significado que posee el templo no
solo para los ecuatorianos sino incluso para
la comunidad católica a nivel mundial. |
