Abstract

Background: pregnancy aged ≥ 35 years is a frequent condition that increments the development of complications in both the mother and the newborn. Currently there is no data in Ecuador that determines the frequency of gestations in elderly women or the complications that these pregnancies may present. Objective: to determine the frequency of pregnancy in women aged ≥35 years and the complications presented in patients treated at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital in Cuenca along 2019. Methodology: descriptive cross-sectional study. The universe is constituted by the medical records of pregnant women aged ≥35 years (obtained from the MIS-AS 400 system), whose pregnancy, delivery and product were treated at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital. A form was elaborated; it contains sociodemographic and obstetric variables of the mother, as well as the newborn. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed in Excel, using simple tables of frequency and percentage. Results: The 25.46% (388) of the births attended at the Hospital during 2019 were in pregnant women with advanced maternal age. Of these, 9.79% were primiparous and the 23.2% presented comorbidities. Caesarean section was performed in 62.89% of cases and 7.99% of pregnancies ended in abortion. Immediate postpartum hemorrhage presented in 18 patients. Fetal mortality occurred in 2.06% of the cases and 17.01% of newborns were admitted to the pediatric ICU. Conclusion: advanced maternal age is a risk factor due to the comorbidities and complications that occur during pregnancy and childbirth, most of which can be prevented and controlled with adequate prenatal care.
