Abstract: | BACKGROUND. Respiratory Syncytial Virus worldwide is the most common virus for lower respiratory tract infections in children under 3 years of age, presenting from mild symptoms to fatal complications, its identification was made by nasal aspirate chromatography.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE. To determine the prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus infection and clinical complications in patients under 3 years of age admitted to the Pediatric Area of the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. 2016 - 2017.
METHODOLOGY.A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, the study population was the total of patients under 3 years hospitalized for respiratory causes in the Pediatric area of the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital, the diagnosis of Respiratory Syncytial Virus was made by chromatography. The data were collected from the clinical records of the AS400 system and recorded in a form designed by the author, for the statistical analysis the SPSS program was used, the qualitative variables are presented in the form of frequencies, percentages and the quantitative variables by trend measures. central as average.
RESULTS. The prevalence of RSV was 53.7%, with bronchiolitis being the most common presentation (61.7%), it was observed that 28.7% of patients did not suffer complications while 28.7% presented bacterial superinfection, mortality it was 1.2%.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of RSV is high, bronchiolitis was the main presentation of the virus, bacterial superinfection the most frequent complication, with low mortality. |
Description: | ANTECEDENTES. El Virus Sincitial Respiratorio a nivel mundial es el virus más común para infecciones de vías respiratorias inferiores en menores de 3 años, presentando desde sintomatología leve a complicaciones mortales, la identificación del mismo se realizó mediante cromatografía de aspirado nasal.
OBJETIVO GENERAL. Determinar la prevalencia de infección por Virus Sincitial Respiratorio y las complicaciones clínicas en pacientes menores de 3 años ingresados al Área de Pediatría del Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga de la ciudad de Cuenca, Ecuador. 2016 - 2017.
METODOLOGÍA. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal, la población de estudio fue el total de pacientes menores de 3 años hospitalizados por causas respiratorias en el área de Pediatría del Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga, el diagnóstico de Virus Sincitial Respiratorio se realizó por cromatografía. Los datos se recolectaron de las historias clínicas del sistema AS400 y se registraron en un formulario diseñado por la autora, para el análisis estadístico se utilizó el programa SPSS, las variables cualitativas se presentan en forma de frecuencias, porcentajes y las cuantitativas por medidas de tendencia central como la media.
RESULTADOS. La prevalencia del VRS fue del 53,7%, siendo la bronquiolitis la presentación más común (61,7%), se observó que el 28,7% de pacientes no sufrieron complicaciones mientras el 28,7% presentaron sobreinfección bacteriana, la mortalidad fue 1,2%.
CONCLUSIONES: La prevalencia del VRS es elevada, la bronquiolitis fue la principal presentación del virus, la sobreinfección bacteriana la complicación más frecuente, con baja mortalidad. |
