Características del síndrome de burnout en médicos encargados del cuidado de pacientes ingresados por Covid en el Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga. Cuenca 2020

Abstract

Background: With the COVID-19, the demands for medical services have increased dramatically. Even before this pandemic, the high prevalence of burnout, complex causes, and critical consequences had been worrisome.

Objectives: To determine the characteristics of the Burnout Syndrome in doctors in charge of the care of patients admitted for Covid at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital. Cuenca 2020.

Methods: A prospective descriptive study was carried out in the doctors in charge of the care of patients admitted for Covid-19 at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital, during two months of study. A data collection form was applied based on the variables raised and the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire. The database was placed in Excel, and statistical software SPSS V 23, for the analysis.

Results: The mean age in this study was 32 years, the female sex represents 53.5%; the average number of patients seen per week was 20, the doctors worked an average of 54 hours per week; the majority of the charge was of care residents with 61.3%, of the clinical hospitalization service representing 62.7%. Of the total, 74.7% met the Burnout criteria, of which 70.7% presented a high level of affectation in the area of emotional fatigue.

Conclusion: the levels of Burnout in medical personnel is a palpable reality, the personnel who work with COVID-19 patients mostly occupy the position of care resident with an average age of 32 years, there is no marked differentiation between the work of the treating physician and the resident physician in these areas, the predominant sex in this study was female.
