Promover y prevenir la epilepsia en la atención primaria de salud mediante la aplicación de conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas en estudiantes y maestros de la parroquia Quingeo, provincia del Azuay, año 2011

Abstract

Quasi-experimental study was conducted with the aim of promoting and preventing epilepsy by applying knowledge, attitudes and practices among students and teachers of the parish Quingeo of the Province of Azuay in 2011.

Methods: 249 surveys were conducted standardized, students and teachers of the Parroquia Quingeo, subsequently provided an educational intervention to the study population and to measure the impact of the intervention was the same post intervention survey.

Results: The mean age for the student population stood at 14.10 years (SD = 1.97) and for the population of teachers in 36.04 years (SD = 9.99), most of the population had heard epilepsy (93.2% and 95.9% student teachers), but the percentage of cases heard by people with this disease was low (17.8% and 60.3% student teachers) were achieved statistically significant changes in (p <0.05) in the following items: cause brain disease, infectious causes, heredity (students only), blood diseases (students only). The acceptance of people with epilepsy change significantly with more benefit for students, also as to the stigma on education, equality of intelligence of people with epilepsy, sexual activity, pregnancy and employment practices against a seizure.

Conclusions: We achieved positive changes in knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding students in the causes of epilepsy.
