| Abstract: | Epilepsy tends to involve neuropsychological impairments according to its clinical manifestations, onset of epileptic symptoms, frequency, type of seizures and treatment.
The objective of this research was to determine the impairment level of cognitive functions in patients who have been diagnosed with generalized seizures epilepsy and have attended “Jose Carrasco Arteaga” hospital in Cuenca. The research was carried out through a quantitative, non-experimental and descriptive approach. A socio-demographic record was applied to explore the characteristics of the participants, as well as the Brief Neuropsychological Assessment in Spanish (Neuropsi) to evaluate the degree or level of the cognitive impairment. This research was carried out with a sample of 60 patients, including men and women, between 18 and 65 years old. Among the most relevant results, we found that the participants presented difficulties in the areas of memory, language, reading and writing, whereas mnesic evocation area showed the most impairment. |
| Description: | La epilepsia de acuerdo a sus manifestaciones clínicas, inicio del cuadro epiléptico, frecuencia, tipo de las crisis y tratamiento, suele conllevar a alteraciones neuropsicológicas. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar el nivel de alteración de las funciones cognitivas en pacientes con diagnóstico de epilepsia con crisis generalizadas que acuden al Hospital “José Carrasco Arteaga” de Cuenca. El estudio se llevó a cabo mediante un enfoque cuantitativo, de diseño no experimental, de tipo descriptivo. Se aplicó una ficha sociodemográfica para explorar características de los participantes, y se empleó el instrumento de Evaluación Neuropsicológica Breve en Español (Neuropsi) para evaluar el grado o nivel de las alteraciones cognitivas. El estudio se realizó con 60 pacientes que incluyeron hombres y mujeres, entre los 18 y 65 años. Dentro de los resultados más relevantes se encontró que los participantes presentaron dificultades en las áreas de memoria, lenguaje y lecto-escritura, siendo en los procesos de evocación mnésica, donde se evidenció una mayor alteración. |
