Abstract
The public space is being transformed because of the processes of globalization and privatization, as well as by the forms of social control; the squares and markets are being redesigned and regulated in order to restrict their uses and activities. Although the designs of these spaces contemplate aesthetic and functional perspectives, they also show alterations in the practices in space, which are produced by the need to maintain and adapt to the changes in force.
The interest of this research is an approach to the changes that derive from intervention projects in the public space through appropriation, adaptation and alternative uses. The selected case is the 9th of October Square in the city of Cuenca.
Resumen
El espacio público está siendo transformado a causa de los procesos de globalización y privatización, así como por las formas de control social; plazas y mercados están siendo rediseñados y reglamentados con el fin de restringir sus usos y actividades. Si bien los diseños propuestos para estos espacios contemplan perspectivas estéticas y funcionales también evidencian alteraciones sobre las prácticas en el espacio, las mismas que se producen por la necesidad de mantenerse y acoplarse a los cambios vigentes.
El interés de esta investigación es aproximarse a los cambios que generan los proyectos de intervención en el espacio público mediante la apropiación, adaptación y usos alternativos. El caso seleccionado es la Plaza 9 de Octubre de la ciudad de Cuenca.
