Abstract
This paper analyzes the controversy between Roger Scruton and David Davies regarding photography as an artistic representation. The first section of this essay presents the scrutonian argument, which affirms, through a comparison between photography and painting, that the former cannot be an artistic representation as long as photographs are a mechanical reproduction of reality which details are not in the artist’s control. Moreover, the argument that Davies elaborates against Scruton is analyzed, in which he defends, based on Rudolph Arnheim and Henry Cartier-Bresson’s ideas, that photographs possess unique characteristics, which differentiate them from copies of reality, and which are used by the photographer to communicate his thoughts. Finally, the debate is overcome by resorting to photography theory, which supports Davie´s argument.
Resumen
El presente ensayo analiza la polémica entre Roger Scruton y David Davies respecto a la fotografía como representación artística. En la primera parte de este trabajo se expone el argumento scrutoniano, el cual afirma, mediante una comparación de la fotografía con la pintura, que la primera no puede ser una representación artística en tanto las imágenes fotográficas son una reproducción mecánica de la realidad donde el artista no tiene control sobre sus detalles. Luego se analiza la respuesta que David Davies elabora en contra de Scruton, donde defiende, en base a las ideas de Rudolph Arnheim y Henry Cartier-Bresson, que las fotografías poseen características únicas que las diferencian de copias de la realidad, y que dichas características son utilizadas por el fotógrafo para comunicar sus pensamientos. Finalmente, se supera el debate a favor de Davies recurriendo a la teoría de la fotografía, cuyo contenido apoya su argumento.
