Conocimientos y uso de la anticoncepción oral de emergencia en estudiantes de Enfermería de la Universidad de Cuenca, 2019

Abstract

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) determined that emergency oral contraception (AOE) is not abortive, does not prevent implantation of the fertilized egg, has no effect on the endometrium, therefore, its use constitutes a public health issue, which allows women, especially vulnerable sectors, to have a scientifically proven contraceptive method to avoid unwanted pregnancies and their consequences. Course objective: To determine the knowledge and use of emergency oral contraception in Nursing students of the University of Cuenca, 2018.

Methodology: The study is of descriptive quantitative type of cross section, universe constituted by 627 students of the career of nursing, the type of sampling was random probabilistic formed by 249 participants. The quantitative techniques used were the questionnaire through the application of the knowledge and use test of Llancari Ormeño adapted by the authors; the data was processed and analyzed through the SPSS 20.0 program, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.

Results: the research carried out obtained results that show that there is a high number of students 96.78% have inadequate knowledge about the emergency oral contraceptive (AOE), the 3.22% equivalent to 8 participants demonstrate good knowledge; In the same way there is an inadequate use of emergency oral contraceptive (AOE) by students, only the 2% has used more than 2 times the emergency oral contraceptive in this last year.

Conclusions: The research concludes that the participants in this study have a Regular knowledge, a negative factor if we consider that in the future they will be health personnel, who must be trained to educate and orient on sexual health.
