Serie roja e índices hematimétricos en los escolares de los centros educativos del área urbana del cantón Santa Isabel-2017

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a public health problem worldwide because according to the WHO (World Health Organiztion), nearly 1620 million people suffer from this pathology. In Ecuador, the prevalence of anemia is 5.4% in schoolchildren of initial stage. (1) OBJECTIVE: Determine the red series and hematimetric indexes in students from educational institutions from the urban areas of the Canton Santa Isabel. METHODOLOGY: The study was carried out with a descriptive and cross-sectional research design, where the universe was 1653 and the samples taken were of 312 schoolchildren. The parents who signed the informed consent, developed a survey form about the variables of this investigation, the blood samples collected were transported and analyzed in the Laboratory of the University's Diagnostic Center, for tabulation and the analysis of the results, used the SPSS program N.23 for data recording and preparation of tables results. RESULTS: Of the 312 students studied, 56.1% were women, with ages ranging from 6 to 13 years, the age group with the highest prevalence in both genders is 9 to 11 years, from this group the erythrocyte count represents 6.7% anemia and 3.2% poliglobulia; according to the hemoglobin determination, 3.2% reflects a low value and 1.0% high for its age; with the same classification in Hematocrit with 4.5% and 1.0%; Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), 1.6% and 1.0%; Average Corpuscular Hemoglobin (HCM) with 9.9% and 0.3% and Average Concentration of Corpuscular Hemoglobin (CHCM) 1.3% and 0.6% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The information obtained in this investigation allowed us to know the health status of the school population of Santa Isabel, in relation to the red series and its alterations, obtaining statistical information to compare future studies
