Prácticas interculturales de las personas de sabiduría respecto a planificación familiar, Taday, 2018

Abstract

Background. Family planning is considered as the ability of a family to decide on its procreation, this concept also includes the ancestral knowledge, passed on from generation to generation by the people of wisdom. Nowadays, the public health institutions of Ecuador recognize the habits, beliefs and ancestral customs taken into account in the intercultural and multiethnic.

General purpose. Describe the Intercultural Practices of the People of Wisdom regarding Family Planning.

Methodology. It is a qualitative phenomenological study, we worked with 10 people of wisdom from the Taday parish, recognized by the community and by the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador, women who were informed about the research and signed the informed consent. Semistructured interviews were recorded, transcribed as primary documents and passed through an analysis process using the Atlas ti software.

Results All the people of wisdom who participated in the research were adult women and older adults with extensive experience in their communities, whose educational levels were low.

The knowledge and practices that apply in their community were transmitted from generation to generation, mainly by the female line. The credibility of the people of wisdom was based on the favorable results they obtained with the users. Among the most common practices for family planning was the preparation of beverages with the use of medicinal plants both to avoid conception and to favor it.

Conclusions The practices were not completely homogenous in the participants, common uses of plants such as huarmipoleo and attack to favor conception are evident; while the lemon and avocado peel to avoid conception
