Abstract

Background: adolescence stage includes physical and psychological change, with predisposition to develop acne, due to hormonal or lifestyle changes, an inadequate management may have a negative impact on the role of self-esteem and self-concept. Objective: to determine the effects of acne in self-esteem and self-concept in adolescents of the Santa Mariana de Jesús school, 2017. Methodology: a quantitative descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study was carried out. The universe comprises 190 high school students, the sample calculation corresponds to 127 adolescents. The Rosenberg scale will be applied to determine the level of self-esteem, the personal self-concept questionnaire (APE) and Guerra-Tapia self-reported visual scale to determine the severity of acne. The results will be processed in Excel and SPSS version 15. The variables will be represented as absolute and relative frequencies (percentages). Results: 93.7% of the sample studied was female, with the age group 14-16 years old and the urban origin being the most frequent. The prevalence of low self-esteem and negative self-concept was 9.4 and 23.6%, respectively. While the frequency of acne was 46.5%, being the mild severity more frequent. The most frequent physical consequence of acne was skin damage with 19.69%. Adolescents with acne had greater psychosocial consequences of negative self-concept with 39% and low self-esteem with 15.3%. Conclusions: acne increases negative self-concept, low self-esteem, social isolation and attempted suicide. Therefore, the multidisciplinary and early management of acne diminishes these consequences that negatively influence the quality of life of adolescents.
