Abstract

The metabolic syndrome is a complex clinical entity, predisposes to the development of diabetes, hypertension and Dyslipidemia. The incidence is 15% in the population with HIV and is increased in patients with antiretroviral therapy. Objectives: to determine the incidence of metabolic syndrome and its association with protease inhibitors in patients with antiretroviral therapy from the unit attention Integral of patients living with HIV/AIDS of the Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso. Cuenca-Ecuador, March - August 2016. Methods: a cohort study was conducted in 251 patients with HIV, the exposed cohort comprised of 125 patients receiving inhibitors of the protease and the unexposed cohort with 126 patients with other schemes. The criteria of ATP-III (National Cholesterol Education Program complet Adults Treatment Panel III Report) were used for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Results: the incidence of metabolic syndrome in the sample was 24,7% (RR: 2,22) IC: 1,32-3,74; (p 0.003). In patients receiving protease inhibitors was 32%; in those receiving other schemes was 17.4% (RR: 1,83; IC95%: 1,16-2,9; p: 0,007). The incidence of hypertension in patients receiving protease inhibitors was 15.8% (RR: 2,57; IC 95%: 1,11-5,91; P: 0,019). The incidence of hypertriglyceridemia was 50% (RR: 1,58; IC95: 1,14-2, 19; P: 0.004). Conclusions: the incidence of metabolic syndrome, hypertension and hypertriglyceridemia is higher in patients receiving protease inhibitors, with respect to those receiving other therapy as antiretroviral scheme, and their relationship is statistically significant
