Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To determinate the prevalence of self-medication
in students of the University of Cuenca. 2015
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional, retrospective study
was conducted between March and July 2015. The
universe was formed by 13,860 students (6,031 men
and 7,829 women) and a sample of 397 students (212
women and 185 men, between 17-31 years). The instrument
used was an anonymous survey previously validated.
The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics
with Excel 2010 programs.
RESULTS: The tendency of the frequency for self-medication
of painkillers is greater regard to antibiotics, with
the increased consumption and effectiveness of ibuprofen
and amoxicillin respectively. The main reasons
for their consumption correspond to: recommendations
from friends or family, trust in a previous treatment and
recommendation at the pharmacy. The main hassles
that are reported are itching and distress. In the case
of painkillers and anxiety, in the case of antibiotics rash,
nausea and diarrhea
CONCLUSIONS: This study determines the need to promote
education in the field of self-medication in students
of the University of Cuenca improving their knowledge

en los estudiantes de la Universidad de Cuenca.

METODOLOGÍA: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal,
en el período marzo – julio 2015. El universo lo
conformaron 13.860 estudiantes (6.031 hombres y 7 829
mujeres) y una muestra de 397 estudiantes (212 mujeres
y 185 hombres, entre 17 a 31 años). El instrumento utilizado
fue una encuesta anónima previamente validada.
Los datos fueron procesados mediante estadística descriptiva
con los programas de Excel 2010.
RESULTADOS: La tendencia para la frecuencia de automedicación
para analgésicos es mayor en relación a
los antibióticos, siendo los de mayor consumo y efectividad
el ibuprofeno y la amoxicilina respectivamente. Las
principales razones del consumo de los mismos corresponden
a: recomendaciones de amigos o familiares,
confianza en un tratamiento anterior y recomendación
en la farmacia, Las principales molestias que se reportan
son comezón y angustia en el caso de los analgésicos
y angustia, ronchas, nausea y diarrea en el caso de
los antibióticos.
CONCLUSIONES: En el presente estudio se determina la
necesidad de fomentar la educación en los estudiantes
de la Universidad de Cuenca, en materia de automedicación,
mejorando sus conocimientos
