Psicopatología en familiares de pacientes alcohólicos del Hospital Psiquiátrico Humberto Ugalde Camacho– CRA. Cuenca, periodo junio - agosto. 2016

Abstract

Background: alcoholism causes difficulties, not only to the alcoholic person, but also to the family. Anxiety, depression and other psychopathological symptoms occur in relatives.

Objective: to determine psychopathology in relatives of alcoholic patients of the Psychiatric Hospital Humberto Ugalde Camacho - CRA.

Method: this is a descriptive cross-sectional observational study done at the Psychiatric Hospital Humberto Ugalde Camacho. The study population consisted of all relatives of alcoholic patients who attended programed meetings. Was applied the Symptom Check List 90. The data were analyzed with the programs Microsoft Excel 10 and SPSS Statistics version 15.0 and are represented in tables.

Results: The study population consisted of 80 relatives. According to sociodemographic data, the majority were female (68.75%), adults (77.5%), and children (33.75%) with primary and secondary education (75.0%). The psychopathological symptoms most frequent were: phobic anxiety (17.5%), interpersonal sensitivity (12.5%) and somatizations (11.3%). It was observed that wives in equal percentage (11.8%) presented interpersonal sensitivity and depression; mothers: interpersonal sensitivity (57.1%); parents: hostility (27.3%); children: paranoid ideation (11.1%) and siblings: somatizations (33.3%). 6 (7.5%) relatives presented severe symptoms and 1 (1.3%) very severe symptomatology. 6 (7.5%) relatives denied symptomatology and 1 (1.3%) exaggerated it. 11 (13.8%) relatives attempted to show themselves better than they actually were.

Conclusions: a significant number of the respondents presented a psychopathological symptom in relation to the alcoholism of their relative, considering the family as a target population for prevention
