| Abstract: | This research studies migration of soil fines particles around underground drainage systems that have completed their design period in Cuenca - Azogues highway on the southern andean zone of Ecuador. Fines migration is verified on the zone around underground drains, it allows to assess the variation on the soil hydraulic properties, different underground drainage solutions and its influence on fines migration. Two types of underground drain were find on the selected highway sections, one with filter material and another without filter material. These types of underground drains allowed a comparative analysis about fines migration related to filter presence. Laboratory tests of soil classification, Atterberg limits and hydrometer particle size were performed on samples of natural soil, soil next to underground drain and drainage material recollected on the selected highway sections. Flow network modeling for each of the selected highway sections allowed a theoretical analysis of the hydraulic gradient and its influence on fines migration. Fines migration on underground drains corresponds to silts, a higher fines migration is generated at underground drains without filter material. Permeability of the soil next to underground drain is varely affected by silts migration, however, the use of filter material on underground drains prevent their clogging. |
| Description: | El presente estudio evalúa la migración de finos del suelo alrededor de subdrenes que han cumplido su vida útil en la vía Cuenca – Azogues ubicada en la zona andina sur del Ecuador. La investigación comprueba que existe migración de finos en la zona alrededor de los subdrenes, permitiendo la evaluación de la variación en las características hidráulicas del suelo, las distintas soluciones de subdren y su influencia en la migración de finos. Dos clases de subdrenes se presentaron en los tramos de vía seleccionados, uno con material filtrante y otro sin material filtrante, lo que permitió un análisis comparativo entre estos dos tipos de subdren con respecto a la migración de finos. Ensayos de clasificación de suelos, límites de Atterberg e hidrómetro fueron realizados en laboratorio para el análisis de las muestras de suelo natural, suelo junto al subdren y material drenante, recolectadas en los tramos seleccionados para el estudio. Un análisis del gradiente hidráulico fue realizado mediante la modelación de la red de flujo en cada tramo de vía seleccionado. La migración de finos corresponde en su totalidad a limos, presentándose una mayor migración en el subdren que no posee material filtrante. La permeabilidad en el suelo junto al subdren sufre una mínima variación por la migración de limos que se produce, sin embargo, el uso de material filtrante impide la colmatación del subdren. |
