| Abstract: | BACKGROUND: the checklist of safe surgery was created in 2004 by The World Health Organization (WHO) with the aim of reducing global morbidity and mortality during surgery.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To verify the implementation of the Safe Surgery Manual of the World Health Organization in Hospital Vazquez Moreno, Gualaceo, April to September, 2014.
METHODOLOGY: A descriptive study, with a universe of 452 surgeries, the method of data collection was the registration checklist for safe surgery, in a form; knowledge of health workers were determined by means of a questionnaire prepared based on data from the WHO and the tabulation of data using SPSS.
RESULTS: manual application optimally performed in 91.9%. Preoperatively it is fulfilled in 91.05%, but the marking of the surgical site is not performed in 54.9%. Intraoperatively it is completed in 92.1%, but no prophylactic antibiotic therapy is administered in 52.7%. Postoperative is completed in 91.4%, but not verified instruments 71%. Medical staff knowledge about the manual score between 81.2% and 62.5% respectively.
CONCLUSION: This manual was easy to apply, allowed us to detect the flaws so that the medical staff can correct and improve the wellbeing of surgical patients and we recommend its use.

| Description: | ANTECEDENTES: la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), creó desde el año 2004 el listado de verificación de cirugía segura, con la finalidad de disminuir a nivel mundial las tasas de morbilidad y mortalidad durante el acto quirúrgico.
OBJETIVO GENERAL: Verificar la aplicación del Manual de Cirugía Segura de la Organización Mundial de la Salud en el Hospital Moreno Vázquez, Gualaceo, abril a septiembre, 2014.
METODOLOGÍA: realizamos un estudio descriptivo, con un universo de 452 cirugías, el método de recolección de datos fue el registro del listado de verificación de cirugía segura, en un formulario; los conocimientos del personal sanitario fueron determinados por medio de un cuestionario elaborado con base de datos de la OMS y la tabulación de datos mediante el SPSS.
RESULTADOS: la aplicación del manual se realizó de manera óptima en un 91.9%. El preoperatorio se cumple en el 91.05%, pero el marcado del sitio quirúrgico no se realiza en el 54.9%. En el intraoperatorio se cumple en un 92.1%, pero no se administra antibioticoterapia profiláctica en el 52.7%. El postquirúrgico se cumple en el 91.4%, pero no verifican el instrumental el 71%. Los conocimientos de personal sanitario sobre el manual están entre el 81.2% y el 62.5% respectivamente.
CONCLUSIÓN: este manual fue fácilmente aplicable, nos permitió detectar las falencias para que el personal sanitario pueda corregirlas y así mejorar el bienestar de los pacientes quirúrgicos por lo que recomendamos su utilización.
