Abstract: | The aim of the study is to determine if periodontal disease is a risk factor for preterm or low birth weight infants. Historical cohort study was conducted with the participation of 80 women in labor: 40 with periodontal disease [exposed cohort] and 40 with full ausencencia of dental piesa [unexposed cohort]. The presence of periodontal disease was determined using the CPITN index [Comunity Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs]. In both groups the variables were analyzed low birth weight, preterm birth and intrauterine growth retardation. The exposed cohort had a significantly increased risk of low birthweight babies [RR: 3.67, p: 0.020, Chi2: 5.54] and preterm delivery [RR: 10, Chi2 8.54, p: 0.004], the relationship with stunting intrauterine is not statistically significant [Chi2: 2.22, p: 0.14]. Periodontal disease is a risk factor for preterm delivery and low birth weight neonates, however this relationship with intrauterine malnourished unproven |
