Características de tinnitus en pacientes del servicio de consulta externa de otorrinolaringología y maxilofacial del Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, enero de 2012 a diciembre de 2014

Abstract

Background: Tinnitus affects 10% of the world population (1). In the US, about 50 million people suffer from this disease (2); in Ecuador there are no studies yet.

Objetive: To determine the characteristics of tinnitus in patients maxillofacial service outpatient otolaryngology in the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital during January 2012 to December 2014.

Methodology: A descriptive research, retrospective and quantitative was performed. The universe was made up the medical records diagnosed with tinnitus maxillofacial service outpatient otolaryngology in the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital during January 2012 to December 2014. The forms are used to collect data and SPSS by absolute frequency and percentages, being represented in tables.

Results: Tinnitus is rare (0.73%), affected more patients 50- 64 years (39%) and females (62.5%). The bilateral localitation was the most common(43%) and dominated the time of evolution greater than 12 months (50%). More otologic causes (62.5%), followed by neurologic (13.2%) and metabolic (5.9%) and in 13.2% of patients did not determine the etiology. It was diagnosed in 60.3% of cases by physical and audiological exam. They received drug treatment 44.1% of patients. The main complication was anxiety (10.29%).

Conclusions: Tinnitus is a rare condition in our country, the most affected are the elderly and women, the audiological test is very useful in the diagnosis and treatment is directed to each particular cause.
