| Abstract: | Due to the increase in forest fires in Ecuador and to the great importance land cover has in the regulation of the hydrological cycles in the Paute River Basin, an analysis of the behavior of burned areas using remote sensing, was performed. For the intended purpose, ortho-photos corresponding to the year 2010-2011 were selected, as well as Landsat 8 satellite imagery for the 2013-2014 time period, with the purpose of identifying the places with the greatest presence of burned patches. Afterwards, the variables that were more significantly associated to the occurrence of forest fires were determined; these variables were: (1) the closest elevation value, (2) the distance to the closest road, (3), the distance to an intervened ecosystem, and (4) the average elevation value; nevertheless, these variables weren’t sufficient for generating a prediction model. The distance at which clustering is more intense is 20 Km, and the sites with the greatest burn density did not present similar characteristics regarding vegetation cover dominance. The minimum surface area of the burned patches identified was 21.38 Km². The most affected areas of forest and protective vegetation (ABVP) were: (1) the northern portion of Moya-Molón, (2) northeast of Guarongo, (3) southwest of Sunsun-Yanasacha, (4) Yanuncay-Irquis, (5) west of Machángara-Tomebamba, (6) northeast of Allcuquiro, and (7) north of Dudas-Mazar. |
| Description: | Debido al aumento de los incendios forestales en todo el país y a la gran importancia que tiene la cobertura vegetal de la cuenca del río Paute en la regulación de los ciclos hídricos, se realizó un análisis del comportamiento de las quemas mediante el uso de sensores remotos. Para esto, se seleccionaron orto-fotos del año 2010-2012 e imágenes satelitales Landsat 8 de los años 2013 y 2014 con el fin de identificar las zonas con mayor presencia de quemas, luego se determinaron las variables que mostraron mayor asociación con la ocurrencia de los incendios, estas fueron: (1) valor de elevación más cercano, (2) distancia a la vía más cercana, (3) distancia a los ecosistemas intervenidos y (4) elevación promedio; sin embargo, no fueron suficientes para poder generar un modelo de predicción. Las quemas detectadas comienzan a formar conglomerados a partir de los 20 Km y los sitios con mayor densidad de quemas no presentaron similitud en cuanto a la dominancia de la cobertura vegetal. La superficie mínima de las áreas quemadas que se identificaron en este estudio es de 0.027Km² y la superficie total quemada en el período analizado fue de 21.38 Km². Las áreas de bosque y vegetación protectora (ABVP) más afectadas fueron: (1) la parte norte de Moya-Molón, (2) noreste de Guarongo, (3) suroeste de Sunsun-Yanasacha, (4) Yanuncay-Irquis, (5) oeste de Machángara-Tomebamba, (6) noroeste de Allcuquiro y (7) norte de Dudas-Mazar. |
