Estado nutricional y factores asociados en niños entre 6 a 12 años que acuden a la consulta externa del Hospital del IESS. Riobamba. 2014

Abstract

Objective. Nutritional status and associated factors in children aged 6-12 years attending the outpatient clinic of the Hospital of IESS, Riobamba 2014 were evaluated.

Material and methods. With a transversal design 236 children aged 6-12 years who were treated at the Hospital of IESS of Riobamba in 2014. A form was used validated survey were included. Malnutrition prevalence and associated factors was investigated.

Results. The study population was characterized by a median age of 8 years, with a predominance of women (54.2%), most residents in urban areas (80.9%) and 83.9% mestizos. 21.2% belonged to the second year of primary and 37.7% of parents had a higher (P <0.005).

The prevalence of malnutrition was 38.13% weight under 7.6%, 19.9% overweight and 10.6% obese. These results were associated with lack of physical activity (P = 0.020), hours of screen time (P = 0.035) and day of screen time (P = 0.0002).

Besides association with a history of receiving formula (P = 0.021) and the level of higher education in the parents (P = 0.005) was found.

Conclusion. Prevalence of Malnutrition in Children's Hospital IESS of Riobamba was high and was associated with receiving formula, higher level of parental education, physical inactivity, time in hours and days in front of a screen.
