Abstract: | Under physiological conditions, glucose has a critical role in providing energy to the central nervous system. Hypoglycemia is a common side effect of treatment with insulin or sulfonylureas in diabetics. Fear of hypoglycemia and the development of syndromes such as hypoglycemia unawareness and poorcounter pose additional difficulties intensified antidiabetic treatment (1)
Method and materials.
A prevalence study, descriptive cross sectional in which 215 diabetic patients treated at the Hospital Jose Carrasco Arteaga in Cuenca city at 2012 were included collecting information from the database of the Department of Statistics and so was conducted identify the association of hypoglycemia with the following risk factors: age, sex, treatment received and Diabetic Complication Concomitant.
Results.
It was found in our study that the majority of patients experiencing hypoglycemia was over 60 female, with a percentage of30.99% and28.12%respectively.Regarding the treatment received by patients, most of who have been taken hypoglycemia treatment with oral agents with a percentage of 61.05%. We further note that based on concomitant diabetic complications most patients experiencing hypoglycemia are diabetic neuropathy presenting with a percentage of36.84%.
Conclusion
Most diabetic patients who have hypoglycemia are the major female sex 60 years. Furthermore, in these patients, most who presented hypoglycemia are those who have received treatment for diabetes, specifically oral agents. And as for those who submitted concomitant diabetic complications, most had neuropathy.

Description: | En condiciones fisiológicas la glucosa proporciona energía al sistema nervioso central. La hipoglucemia es un efecto secundario frecuente del tratamiento con insulina o sulfonilureas en diabéticos. El temor a la hipoglucemia y el desarrollo de varios síndromesy la contra regulación deficiente suponen dificultades adicionales a la intensificación del tratamiento antidiabético. (1)
Método y materiales.
Se realizó un estudio de prevalencia descriptivo de corte transversal incluyéndose 215 pacientes diabéticos atendidos en el Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga en la ciudad de Cuenca en el año 2012 recolectando información de la base de datos del Departamento de Estadística identificando la asociación de hipoglicemia con los siguientes factores de riesgo: Edad Sexo Tratamiento recibido y ComplicaciónDiabética Concomitante.
Resultados.
Se encontró que la mayoría de pacientes que presentaron hipoglicemia fueron del sexo femenino mayores de 60 años con un porcentaje de 28,12% y 30,99% respectivamente. En cuanto al tratamiento recibido la mayor parte de los que toman tratamientoa base de antidiabéticos orales presentan hipoglicemia(61,05%). Observamos además que en base a la complicación diabética concomitante la mayoría de pacientes que presentaron hipoglicemia son los que padecían neuropatía diabética con un porcentaje de 36,84%.
Conclusión
La mayoría de pacientes diabéticos que han presentado hipoglicemia son del sexo femenino mayores de 60 años. Además de estos pacientes la mayoría que presento hipoglicemia son los que han recibido tratamiento antidiabético, específicamente antidiabéticos orales. Y en cuanto a los que han presentado alguna complicación diabética concomitante, la mayoría presentaron neuropatía.
