Background: Depression is the second most frequent disease in the world and the first cause of labor withdrawal. This pathology has a high prevalence in patients with obesity, resulting in a bidirectional relationship between these concerns. Early detection and joint treatment of these pathologies would reduce the prevalence of these diseases which are currently a public health problem. Objective: To determine the prevalence of depression and associated factors in patients with obesity. Methodological design: This is a quantitative cross-sectional analytical study. A target population was comprised of 588 people diagnosed with obesity of which a sample of 208 individuals was selected. The study allowed to separate the population into two groups: obese without depression and obese with depression; The presence of associated factors was analyzed: age, sex, accompaniment, degree of obesity and degree of functionality. Depending on the type of variable we worked: quantitative variables with arithmetic mean (x) and standard deviation (DS) and qualitative variables with frequencies (No.) and percentages (%). Chi square analysis, Odds Ratio (OR), 95% Confidence Interval (CI) and p-value were used to analyze the association. For this purpose, the IBM SPSS 24 program was used (Annex 1 license statement) Results: The frequency of depression in the studied group was high: 72.1%, more prevalent in women. Factors that increase the risk of presenting depression having a II OR III degree and have a deterioration in the functionality and performance of activities of daily living . Conclusion: The frequency of depression in patients with obesity in our environment is high. The Factors that increase the presentation of patients with obesity according to the statistical analysis: a greater degree of obesity, comorbidity, a deterioration in functionality
