(Universidad de Cuenca, 2019-04-11) Sacoto Maldonado, Lenin Santiago; Huiracocha Tutivén, María de Lourdes
Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding (EB) benefits the health of the mother and the infant in the short and long term, being the most appropriate option for feeding the infants. Objective: To identify factors of the mothers and their families associated with the practice of the EB at Hospital Mariano Estrella, 2018. Methods and materials: Cross-sectional, analytical, prevalence study in 119 mothers of children under 6 months, who had practiced the BF, were administered a questionnaire structured by the author for sociodemographic data and related to the practice of FB derived from the ENSANUT, the data were analyzed with the statistical program SPSS in its version 15, the qualitative variables were expressed in relative and absolute frequencies. The ORs were calculated to determine factors associated with the practice of EB. Results: The prevalence of the EB was 33.61%, 58% of the mothers had a good knowledge in reference to the BF, the factors associated with this practice were living with <5 members in the home and belonging to a family nuclear where both decrease the likelihood of maintaining the EB and despite not statistically associated significant breastfeeding at the time of delivery, no restart of labor activities after childbirth, vaginal delivery, advice on BF and good knowledge about it predominated in the group of EB. Conclusion: The prevalence of EB in this population is low and was found to be associated with sociodemographic factors.
