    Incidencia de anemia en personas mayores de 60 años de la unidad de la tercera edad del I.E.S.S. y pacientes hospitalizados en el departamento de clínica del I.E.S.S. Cuenca 2003

    Anemia increases in frequency with age and is one of the most common medical problems in old age. The study was conducted in two groups of 100 people each. The first meeting in a non-medical site: Unit Senior Regional III Instituo Ecuadorian Social Security, consisted of 10 men and 90 women, age range 60-84 years living in the urban area. The mean hemoglobin in women was 14.2 g / dL in males and 16.1 g / dL. Anemic detected. IESS Hospital of Cuenca, the group consisted of 62 men and 38 women, age range 60-95 years, living in urban areas (57) and rural (43). They detected 41 anemic. Twenty-four (38.7) for the 62 men and 17 (47.7) of the 38 women were anemic hemoglobin with an average of 10.5 g / dL and 8.7gr / dL, respectively. Of the total of 41 anemic patients, 22 (53.6) they had anemia of chronic disease, 9 (21.9) anemia infections, 3 (7.3) gastric cancer, 2 (4.8) Chronic leukemias and 5 (12.2) had consecutive anemia to upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The study say it is an initial knowledge of anemia in old age to be extended with future research approach.
