When a member of the family system makes the decision to migrate, regardless of the reasons, it affects the families that are waiting. In this process, families experience various emotions that trigger affective losses. For this reason, the general objective was to analyze the affective losses and communication strategies of families with migrant children, as well as to identify the emotions, experiences and describe the communication strategies created by transnational families. The research was based on an inductive method, with a non-experimental design, approached from a qualitative approach, with an exploratory scope and had a study group made up of 4 transnational families from the community of San Pedro. Parents and siblings of migrants, selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, were interviewed. The results showed that affective losses are a multifaceted process that is associated with experiencing emotions and these lead to behavioral changes linked to a grieving process in transnational families. Similarly, they seek to redistribute and structure themselves through communication strategies with phases and actions related to living together on a daily basis and seeking solutions to break the distance and feel united as a family. Finally, it is emphasized that there are no investigations within the Santa Isabel Canton that are linked to the emotional experiences that migration brings to families
