Consumo sustentable de agua en viviendas de la ciudad de Cuenca
(2018) Molina Castro, Eduardo Xavier; Quesada Molina, Juan Felipe; Calle Pesantez, Andrea Estefania; Ortiz Fernandez, Jessica Mariela; Orellana Valdez, Diana Alejandra
This study proposes and supports the application of 4 criteria for the sustainable management of drinking water inside the dwelling in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The criteria determined are: the control of water consumption, the control of leaks, the use of saving devices and water reuse systems. Three levels of assessment are defined for each criterion: standard, best practices and superior practices. For the development of the research, surveys are applied to the population that allow probing the existence and predisposition to incorporate drinking water saving practices in the homes, in addition measurements of water consumption by uses are made in 10 homes for a week, together the official information on the water consumption of the canton Cuenca facilitated by the municipal company of the city is processed, and several standards are analyzed: ISO, INEC and the Ecuadorian Technical Construction Standard, among others. Finally, it concludes with the determination of a percentage of water savings of up to 30%, which can be obtained the application of sustainable practices.

Estándares de sustentabilidad para viviendas patrimoniales del Centro Histórico de Cuenca-Ecuador
    (2019) Quesada Molina, Juan Felipe

(2018) Quesada Molina, Juan Felipe; Calle Pesantez, Andrea Estefania; Guillen Mena, Vanessa Fernanda; Ortiz Fernandez, Jessica Mariela; Lema Polo, Kleber John
At present, Building Sustainable Assessment methods (BSA) have developed systems to measure and rate the level of compliance of buildings. However, many authors have identifed potential problems that could arise from a poor import of these assessments. The present method was the result of an investigation that proposes to observe and analyze a series of specifc performances of the dwelling and its parts, which allow to ensure the quality of the project and to certify the future performance of the dwelling based on appropriate sustainability indicators for the city of Cuenca. The methodological design of the research went through three stages of development: First, a new approach on sustainable building assessment is presented, which may be suitable for developing countries, based on an exhaustive review of the state of the art. Second stage, based on the study of the city’s housing stock, defnes criteria and indicators. Finally, weightings for each evaluation topic are defned by different experts in the area. The result of this research is an evaluation scheme composed of a hierarchical structure of 3 levels ranging from general to specifc: 8 categories, 38 requirements and 80 evaluation criteria that apply to single family and multifamily houses.

Spatial neighborhood sustainability assessment for urban planning, Cuenca, Ecuador
(2023) Ortiz Fernandez, Jessica Mariela; Astudillo Cordero, Jaime Sebastián; Quesada Molina, Juan Felipe
The accelerated processes of urbanization produce an explosive occupation of the land, creating scattered cities, with great demands for infrastructure and high consumption of raw materials and energy, affecting natural territories and increasing the emission of pollutants. The city of Cuenca-Ecuador as well as several Latin American cities are not strangers to this problem, as it reflects a dispersed growth towards the peripheries that have caused an expansion of the urban landscape. The above situation requires sustainable planning, which contributes to decision-making to identify what measures are needed to regulate the growth of the city. Accordingly, the present research proposes combining the set of indicators of the Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment tool with the spatial analysis of GIS, so that the sustainability assessment can be extended at the city level to support urban planning in Cuenca. For this purpose, a 3-step methodology was proposed: selection of sustainable indicators, evaluation of sustainable performance, and design of a model that integrates SIG+NSA, which allowed incorporating spatial analysis in the sustainable assessment of neighborhoods, by designing a model adapted to Cuenca. This model consists of 15 variables, 12 indicators, and 4 evaluation categories, which result in the sustainable performance level of 149 planning sectors. The developed model makes it possible to automate the analysis processes and generate a complement to the ArcGIS geoprocessing tools for evaluating urban sustainability, as a support tool for planners and decision-makers in city planning processes.
