La patrimonialización de la fiesta de la diablada pillareña. Una mirada antropológica
(2019-11-07) Landy Guamán, Carmen Enriqueta; Muyolema Calle, Armando Homero
As part of a national effort to reclaim the country’s most important living cultural manifestations, the Fiesta de la Diablada Pillareña first appeared in Ecuador’s Official Registry in 2008 where it was recognized as "intangible cultural heritage of the State". Although this was based on the established public policies of the time, the process of its recognition as such has impacted the relations between the community that houses the festivity and the public institutions that surround it. From an ethnographic perspective, in this research I explore the traditional elements and meanings of the Fiesta before and after the recognition. Additionally, I identify the power relations that exist between social actors, and between these and the institutions involved. Furthermore, I analyze how “heritage” is conceived both by the community (including its members, leaders, merchants and characters that participate in the Diablada) as well as the local and national governments (represented by the Autonomous Decentralized Government of Píllaro, the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, respectively). Finally, I evaluate the impact of the declaration on the development of the Fiesta’s activities and reflect on issues related to intangible cultural heritage, in general. In short, the hope is that this retrospective analysis of the Fiesta can contribute to the design of possible public policies related to the management of the intangible cultural heritage, especially ones having to do with declarations.

Social and cultural transformations have entailed to the Ecuadorian State, through the Ministry of Education to incorporate changes in the educational system; among them, the implementation of intercultural education in all its scopes. Therefore, this research focuses on the output profile of the Ecuadorian secondary student graduates, related to the proposal of national identity and interculturality construction and the LOEI (2011, Art. 2b) as an instrument for society’s transformation. Thus, the topic of this work is Perfil de salida del bachiller ecuatoriano: la identidad e interculturalidad como “instrumento de transformación de la sociedad”. The research is qualitative and analyzes how identity is revealed by the students of the Educational Unit “Guillermo Mensi” of El Valle parish. This work was developed under two aspects such as the literature review and field work. First, different concepts that help to understand issues related to interculturality and identity were presented, and it was also explained what methodologies and research techniques were used to analyze the results, strengths and problems detected in the classroom. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are raised, among them; the exit profile generated in the educational institution is not responding to the needs of students in terms of the development of their identity. Therefore, it is necessary to promote in the classrooms different values that lead to forming true transforming citizens of society.

The research "Representation of the cultural identity of the chola cuencana, in the journalistic photography of the newspaper El Mercurio of the city of Cuenca (2009-2019 decade)", had as a general objective to study the journalistic photographs, their titles and legends, published in newspaper El Mercurio, in the decade of 2009-2019, where the chola cuencana is published, to know how a narrative of cultural identity is built, within the framework of the Organic Law of Communication (LOC, 2013). The methodology used was a transversal study, with an interpretive and bibliographic review method, based on the case study of the Diario El Mercurio of the city of Cuenca. The corpus consisted of the review of 3650 copies of the ten-year newspaper library. The chola cuencana, in the ten years of study, appeared as the protagonist in 508 news items with photographs. It was concluded that the discourse is still managed by the media and official entities; It is necessary to manage a third discourse, one that comes from one's own voice, one that allows one to strengthen everything that their collective identity implies, as well as to make visible and vindicate the leading role of the chola cuencana in society, their problems and needs.
