    The work is part of the proposed Tobacco, poverty, disease in the city of Cuenca, 2001. A study was performed in order to identify the most common diseases in hospitalized patients who consume cigarette in the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital in Cuenca.1997- 2001. Loa results obtained by the consumption of snuff were: the total number of investigated (1563pacientes) 38.1 (596pacientes) fuman.En patients who smoke the most common diseases in accordance with the systems were: Genitourinary a condition 32.9siendo The most frequent benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH); in Cardiovascular with 32.8siendo Cerebra Vascular Event (CVD) more frequent; respiratory 15.6siendo more frequent with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), other (diseases unrelated to smoking) with 9.4siendo common as cataract; In the digestive system with greater frequency 9.0presento gastritis.De patients who smoke 79.4son 20.6son male and female. Depending on the age the highest percentages were observed in elderly (> 65) with 44.5; older adults (36-64 years) with 41.6; 13.1 Young adults, teenagers 0.8. According to the 50 primary education, secondary 34.1 Higher 12.2 Illiterate 3-7En the data were divided according to occupation: Employees 33.1 Retired 31.7 10.7 Farmers, Artisans 4.4 Drivers 4 QQDD 4 Professional 3.2, Informal 3.2 Health Professionals 2.2 2.2 Unemployed, Students 0.8, Other 0.3 and 0.2 Religious are those who smoke more. According to the source 74.2 are from urban areas and 25.8 belong to the rural area
