(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-10-17) Bermeo Rodríguez, Bryan Geovanny; Maza Arrobo, Nivia Natividad; Ávila Larrea, Javier Alejandro
Students spend much of their time on electronic devices using different applications that serve as entertainment. For this reason, it is necessary to identify the uses of video games inside the school context and their possible effects on their performance at the academic level. The present investigation raises the objective of describing the use of video games from the perspective of students of the ninth cycle of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Cuenca. Also, it examines their perception of involvement in higher education teaching contexts. This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive scope of a nonexperimental type with a cross-section. ''Questionnaire on the Use and Educational Applications of Video Games'' was applied to 91 students of the ninth cycle of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Cuenca. The results show that 34% of the students use video games regularly, and the average age of gamers is 23 years old. Regarding the implication of the use of video games in educational contexts, the perception of the students is favorable. The following skills: psychomotor, attention, and information assimilation/retention, are the most enhanced by video games. In future research to have a positive influence on the learning process of students, it is necessary to identify video games possible uses in the academic context.
