Carbon footprint is an efficiency indicator of the resources management. It measures the environmental impact produced by daily actions directly or indirectly. It is a fact that academic and labor activities on Higher Education Institutions (HEI) generate greenhouse gases (GHG) that contribute to the carbon footprint of a city. For that reason, it was calculated the carbon footprint of the Central Campus of the University of Cuenca using the methodologies called UNE-ISO 14064-1-2006 and the IPCC guidelines (2006a) to convert the GHG emissions into CO2e emissions. As a result, there were emitted 1158,03 t of GHG (expressed on tCO2e) during the 2017. Those emissions were classified into three scopes as specified by the WRI and WBCSD (2004). The main source of the carbon footprint emission was of the scope 2 with the 67,32%; while the scopes 1 and 3 contributed with the 14,43% and 18,25% of the emissions respectively. Additionally, there was created a pilot mobile application to measure the carbon footprint of the university community trying to reduce it in favor of the institution.
