Emotional exhaustion among hotel employees: the interactive effects of affective dispositions and positive work reflection
(2018) Xu, Shi; Martinez, Larry R; Van Hoof, Hubert B; Estrella Duran, Mateo Julian; Maldonado Perez, Gabriela; Julio, Gavilanes
Hospitality employees inevitably face emotional exhaustion when performing their jobs. The purpose of this study was to investigate dispositional antecedents of hospitality employees’ emotional exhaustion, including self-instability, pessimism, and affect variability, and how employees’ affect variability mediates the relations between self-instability and pessimism and emotional exhaustion. In addition, we explored the moderating role of positive work reflection on the relation between affect variability and emotional exhaustion. A total of 224 frontline employees in 18 four- and five-star hotels in Ecuador responded to surveys about their emotions and work lives. The findings suggest that (a) emotional exhaustion was influenced by affect variability, (b) affect variability mediated the relations between self-instability and pessimism and emotional exhaustion, and (c) the relation between affect variability and emotional exhaustion was weakened by positive work reflection. The results highlight the impor...

"Free” Public universties: too much of good thing?
    (2011) Estrella Duran, Mateo Julian
Many observers would envy Ecuador's public universities, following adoption of a new governing law and the 2008 Constitution, which abolished all student fees. But its 25 public universities are in the odd position of getting too much of a good thing. Elsewhere, advocates for public universities lament a trend toward marketization and privatization and decry shrunken financial contributions from government. Higher education in Ecuador is about to find out if the recent reforms could be problematic, as strings tighten that have just been attached to universities under a bold experiment. There is a particular worry about the threat to university autonomy.

Percepciones de Ecuador como destino según el turista que viaja desde Guayaquil
    (2017) Macias Clavijo, Tito Alfredo
The infrastructure modernization and the modular growth experienced by the former Simón Bolívar airport, now known as José Joaquin de Olmedo, since the introduction of its new terminal in July 2006, have made it attractive for many airlines to establish the hub of their international operations at that airport. This, in turn, has increased the number of international visitors, who arrive and depart from Ecuador by way of the Guayaquil airport. Random surveys of airline passengers shows that, upon arrival, many of them leave Guayaquil and take tours to visit the rest of Ecuador and practice activities related to their free time or business. This study shows the interests, probability of return, perception, recommendations and other related data concerning their visit’s experience

    Quantifying cultural tightness-looseness in Ecuador
    (2021) Jolly, Phillip
Cultural tightness-looseness represents the degree to which a particular culture possesses strong behavioral norms, and the degree to which members of that culture are likely to sanction individuals who deviate from those norms. While tightness-looseness has been quantified for a large and growing number of countries around the world, there are many countries where a tightness-looseness score has yet to be determined, thus impeding the inclusion of those countries in cross-cultural research with a tightness-looseness focus. There is a dearth of research on cultural tightness-looseness in South America in particular. We report results from a national survey of 1,265 Ecuadorian residents which provided quantification of the relatively tight culture of Ecuador.

Reading behavior and compliance among ecuadorian university students: a national study
(2019) Ouyang, Yuxia; Van hoof, Hubert; Sharma, Amit; Cueva Navas, Ana; Estrella Duran, Mateo Julian; Maldonado, Gabriela; Vélez Calvo, Ximena Monserrath; Gavilanes Valle, Julio
A study into reading behavior and reading compliance among 2,600 students in five universities in Ecuador found that their reading behavior and reading compliance were better than among students in the United States, despite the challenges that exist in Ecuadorian higher education. Suggestions for future research, in particular with regard to improving students’ time management skills as a way to enhance their reading compliance, are included. © The Author(s) 2019.

Towards a hospitality management curriculum of the future: adressing ecuador´s student and industry needs
    (2015) Verbeeten, Maria Johanna
This article presents a new perspective on the design of a hospitality management curriculum in Ecuador that not only addresses the needs of incoming students but also meets the needs of the hospitality industry of the future. The article contends that, as Ecuadorian society undergoes massive and rapid changes and as the needs of the hospitality industry in the country are changing with it, future management talent needs to exhibit solid technical abilities, analytical and critical thinking skills and a global awareness, qualities that might not always be present in today’s graduates. The article contends that students need structure and clarity as they progress through their programs of study and as they move from the applied, hands-on experiences in the first two years of their studies to theory and critical thinking exercises in the latter part of their studies. Ecuador’s hospitality management programs should adjust their thinking about what an ideal graduate looks like and modify their programs of study accordingly. Professors should act as role models to future generations of students who will then in turn be motivated to take on leadership roles in the country’s rapidly changing hospitality and tourism industries.
