BACKGROUND: Traditional birth has disappeared, the few remaining midwives are in the rural area; The midwives have basic importance in the place where they reside, for being respected, reliable, with experience, commitment, vocation; These characteristics generate a better interaction with the parturient, facilitating the process, this has made the health agencies recognize their trajectory incorporating interculturality as a health strategy and institutionalizing intercultural delivery, in practice is not being performed despite being a Mandate of the Ministry of Public Health. OBJECTIVE: To determine the application of interculturality in the care of childbirth, in the "Hospital Luis Fernando Martinez", Cañar. 2016. METHODOLOGY: This study is descriptive cross-sectional study. The universe consisted in three obstetricians, two resident physicians, three nurses, three nursing assistants, two midwives and four puerperae. The techniques were quantitative the survey and qualitative the participant observation as well as testimony. The processing and analysis of the information was done in the program SPSS version 22, there was used Word and Excel for designing tables and graphs, for the analysis it is used descriptive statistics and dialectical hermeneutics. USE OF RESULTS: The research determined that intercultural delivery is not used, with gynecological delivery predominating in 95% of the cases. Only exists accompaniment of the relatives, of the midwife, confusing this with intercultural childbirth. There is an incomplete physical adaptation that is not used, the staff knows but does not use it considering it is a hobby, there is a greater risk for personal injury and attention is uncomfortable, demonstrating the lack of applicability of intercultural delivery. In addition, there is no co-coordination, because midwives are not part of the care. These results are important because they show the need to undertake training programs and the recognition of popular knowledge as a complement to gynecological and obstetric care
