(2017) Cevallos Muyulema, Luis Fernando; Toral Tenorio, Federico Marcelo; Roldán Fernández, José Vicente
Background: Several tools have been developed for the study of inadequate prescription, among them we have STOPP START criteria. Observational studies reported that the prevalence of inadequate prescriptions with STOPP criteria ranged from 21.4% to 79% and START criteria ranged from 22.7% to 74%. In Ecuador the assessment of inadequate prescription in the elderly, begins to take relevance of recent form, counting on few studies referring to the subject. Objective: To determine the frequency of potentially inappropriate prescriptions in patients over 65 years of age, treated at the outpatient clinic of the IESS / Cuenca central dispensary, 2015. Method and materials: A descriptive, observational and cross - sectional study was carried out. A sample of 254 clinical histories was obtained and 279 were worked, for a percentage of losses of 10%. A form with clinical and demographic data including age, sex, marital status, polymedication, comorbidity, and inappropriate prescribing according to STOPP-START was used as a measurement instrument. In the analysis the SPSS v15 program was used and descriptive statistics were used using tables and percentages. Results: The most frequent age group was in the 65-74 age group (older adult) with 67% (171); The female sex was more numerous than the male sex, with 68% (172). Of the 254 reviewed clinical histories, 19% were polymedicated, they took 4 or more medications. Of the total population studied, 36% had an inadequate prescription according to STOPP criteria; 29% had an omission of prescription according to START criteria. Conclusions: The frequency of inadequate prescription and omission of prescription was similar to international studies. It is necessary to deepen the knowledge of this medical instrument
