Restoration project of the Casa Dominguez, a heritage house, with the aim of encouraging heritage acupuncture and promoting heritage conservation. The methodological approach combines the participation of different actors with research throughout the process. Case studies of interventions in heritage buildings in Calle las Herrerías and Plaza del Herrero are examined to extract guidelines applicable to a specific section of Avenida Loja. The diagnostic process includes the collection of information on the Casa Dominguez and its urban environment, with the participation of a group of key actors. A self- diagnosis is carried out and a co-creation workshop is held with the owners of the house to share information and proposals about the intervention. Various alternatives are presented and the opinion of the stakeholders is assessed. Finally, the proposal is validated by selecting the most appropriate one based on the prioritization of the stakeholders related to the Casa Dominguez.

Adopting and integrated and holistic perspective for improving conservation of built heritage
(CRC Press, 2019) Cardoso Martínez, Fausto Adrián; García Vélez, Gabriela Elizabeth
Architectural heritage corresponds to one of the most studied cultural products. Recent contributions in this field compel us to understand its conservation far beyond physical interventions. Thus, the aim of this paper is two-fold: 1) Identifying these major shifts of paradigm, to improve current conservation practices, and 2) describing the challenges for managers behind its practical implementation. By analyzing scientific peer-reviewed papers, and official documents of international organizations, three key approaches to be incorporated, were identified that might be called: multi-scale, multi-dimensional and multi-actor approach. But, integrating these approaches is fraught of difficulties. In fact, based on lessons learned through almost 10 years of practiceled research and scientific research carried out in South America, at least four main challenges are discussed: 1) to reach real participation 2) to design gathering information system; 3) to implement a systemic thinking for analysis of data; and 4) to move from projects towards processes.

The study of sustainable architecture faces several limitations such as the tendency towards artificiality, the lack of comprehensive studies and the inclination for cities, leaving aside the active role that rural settlements can play in contemporary society (Correia, Dipasquale, & Mecca, 2014). Consequently, this work proposes an analysis of the vernacular environment - a rural community of the Ecuadorian coast called Agua Blanca in the province of Manabí - trying to find the lessons of sustainability rooted in local practices and adapted to current needs to finally apply them in a house design. For this scope, specific houses were evaluated under environmental, social and economic parameters. This comprehensive study was based on the VerSus methodology, which proposes several principles that facilitate the recognition of the values and qualities of vernacular habitats, linking it with the sustainable (Correia, et al.,2014). The results indicated that the aspect with the most favorable parameters is economic, followed by social and environmental aspects. The community faces a process of transformation between the traditional and the contemporary, expressed above all in the introduction of industrialized materials. However, maintaining the traditional and environmental context is paramount, since it depends on maintaining tourism and community ties that are a key point for the continuity of Agua Blanca. On the other hand, this work contributes in the study of rural coastal areas that suffer a lack of recognition as part of a cultural and historical legacy that in Ecuador is usually directed to regions of the sierra. Maintaining this identity should be the basis for the growth of this region where architecture plays an important role.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-09-13) Núñez Arévalo, Katherine Raquel; Verdugo Carrión, Priscila Alexandra; Cardoso Martínez, Fausto Adrián
Through an exhaustive analysis covering historical, social, photographic and architectural aspects, the inherent values of Hogar Miguel León have been identified. This process has been carried out in close collaboration with the home’s residents, as well as with public and academic institutions. In this way, participatory workshops and the gathering of knowledge have established fundamental guidelines that will serve as the basis for the design criteria of the preliminary restoration project and the development of a management proposal for the conservation of the vernacular heritage architecture of the architectural complex located on Estévez de Toral Street, belonging to Hogar Miguel León.

Diagnosis or auto diagnosis? enhancing conservation practices of built cultural heritage. Case of study Benigno Malo, Ecuador
(International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing ( ISPRS ), 2019) García Vélez, Gabriela Elizabeth; Amaya Ruiz, Jorge Alberto; Tenze Alicia, Margarita; Cardoso Martínez, Fausto Adrián; García Vélez, Gabriela Elizabeth
The acknowledgment that cultural heritage products are repositories of remarkable cultural values has brought the need for guaranteeing their intergenerational transmission. It has given the reason for the existence of conservation as a discipline. In the last two decades, important shifts have taken place regarding conservation practices. Those practices have moved from an object-centered approach, towards a values-based approach. It implies conservation does not focus solely on guaranteeing the physical permanence of a cultural product but ensuring the maximum transfer of its heritage values. Progressively, conservation is being understood more as a collective dialogue process than a technical issue. This recognition highlights the crucial role that a proper diagnosis might play to guide on this complex process. In this regard, the present work aims to reveal from the socio-economic perspective, the aspects that might influence on the conservation process based on the case of study of the Benigno Malo High school, a heritage asset located in Cuenca World Heritage City, Ecuador. In doing so, it explores the socio-economic dynamics around the cultural heritage asset itself, the territory to which it belongs, and the actors that might influence on its conservation process. But even more, it concludes reflecting around the complementarities and divergences between the notions of diagnosis and autodiagnosis and their contribution for improving current conservation practices.

Preventive Conservation approach emerged linked to the museums field. The analogy ‘prevent is better than cure’, derived from the medicine, has inspired conservation measures to diverse types of cultural products. Currently, it guides new tools and techniques to guarantee cultural heritage good’s protection. This approach, has been extended to the immovable cultural heritage management, as a new paradigm. It emphasizes proactive actions, rather than reactive actions, which seeks to prevent damage or at reducing them through control of environmental factors. In the southern region of Ecuador, important experiences in this field, have been developed by the vlir City´s Preservation Management project at the University of Cuenca. Considering reflections of experts such as Andrea Bruno y Nicola di Battista and, recognizing contemporary threats derived from market pressures -on which social and cultural interest are displaced by economic interest- the article analyses the efforts to preserve the cultural heritage under the Preventive Conservation approach. Using the case-of-study the Historic City Centre of Cuenca, area listed as national heritage since 1982 and world heritage site by UNESCO since 1999. The efforts analyzed, refer not only to museums, buildings and historical monuments preservation, but efforts to preserve the spirit of this Andean city, and its social values, which represent the uniqueness of Cuenca. What are the limits of applicability of Preventive Conservation approach? The present reflection, shows the wide range of advances developed in more than one decade .

Reflections about the sense of cultural heritage. Case of Cuenca, Ecuador
(CRC Press. Taylor and Francis Group, 2021) Cardoso Martínez, Fausto Adrián; García Vélez, Gabriela Elizabeth
On the occasion of the second century of the independence of the city of Cuenca, this contribution aims to reflect on the dynamic process of becoming a World Heritage Site, and some of the key actors involved in that recognition process. In chronological order, the first section describes the socio-cultural and physical environment at the national and local scale in the 18th and 19th century, based on relevant descriptions written by foreign visitors. The second section identifies some events, considered as milestones in the transition of Cuenca from a colonial city towards a modern city, emphasizing the global debate between transformation and conservation during the 20th century. The third section refers to the key actors in the valorization of Cuenca as heritage, initially as national heritage (1982) and later as World Heritage Site (1999). It concludes highlighting the “mestizaje” as an essential aspect of its outstanding universal values.
