This study aimed to determine values of RBC and SGA in persons 23 to 42 years old of different sex, height and weight, in order to establish values reference. The study was conducted in 1000 randomly selected people in the urban parishes of the city of Cuenca. Blood samples were collected under strict safety standards and quality control, and analyzed in the Clinical Laboratory of the Regional Hospital "Vicente Corral Moscoso," using the CELL - DYN 3700 analyzer OLL hematology (26). The average age is 31,45 years. The average size is 160 cm; and the average weight was 63.4 kg. In 68,4 % of the population studied the range of red blood cells goes 4'500,000 - 5'499,000 x mm3, with a minimum of 3'800,000 x mm3, a maximum of 6'100,000 x mm3, and a mean value of 5'097,300 ± 14.42 mm3. In 71,6 % of the population analyzed is a range of SGA of 5 - 14 mm/h, with average values 10,8 ± 0,134 mm/h. We find a significant direct relationship with the Chi square test between the variables: red blood cells - sex (p= 0,036); red blood cells - size (p= 0,040); red blood cells - age (p= 0,013); SGA - sex (p= 0.000); SGA - height (p= 0.000); SGA - age (p= 0000); SGA - weight (p= 0.000); with the exception of red blood cells - weight (p= 0.971). We conclude that there is no significant difference between the reference values used in our environment with results obtained in the investigation. KEY WORDS: Red blood cell count, blood sedimentation (SGA), reference values, urban population, adult, Cuenca – Ecuador.
