In the present study were processed 144 urine samples positive for urinary tract infections (UTI) of ambulatory and hospitalized patients from the Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga located in the city of Cuenca. The type of study was descriptive non-experimental, laboratory and sectional. Samples were processed 144 positive for urinary tract infections (UTI); of which 58 worked samples corresponded to the Enterobacteriaceae family, still at a greater rate Escherichia coli (43 %), this study focused on the Production of Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL), which corresponded to 18 of the 58 strains recovered from E. coli. Tests were carried out presumptive and confirmatory, according to the method described in the Manual Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) 2014. With the Enterobacteriaceae ESBL positive tests were performed with other antibiotics sensitivity: Nitrofurantoin, Ampicillin, Gentamicin, Ampicillin plus Clavulanic Acid, Ciprofloxacin and Norfloxacin; as an alternative to a correct antimicrobial therapy and, in doing so, to ensure an effective treatment in vivo for patients who voluntarily participated in the investigation.
