(2018) Abad Crespo, Lorena Cristina; Orellana Vintimilla, Daniel Augusto
ata mining techniques combined with space-time cubes empower the analysis of multidimensional data. A study area in which these advanced analysis techniques can be applied pre-eminently is urban mobility, where investigation of non-motorized mobility patterns is a main priority for several cities around the world. The presented work aimed to extract spatio-temporal patterns from a human movement database containing volunteer-generated cycling data in Cuenca (Ecuador) with the objective to detect places and times where strategies can be applied that promote urban cycling. The methodology takes advantage of the capabilities of the space-time pattern mining toolbox in ArcGIS. The results demonstrate the viability of the proposed methodology for the characterization of non-motorized mobility patterns and its potential for analyzing other mobility datasets.

Aiming to monitor water quality and Environmental variables of ten (10) artificial habitats for amphibious populations rescue in Cuenca city, physicochemical variables (pH, conductivity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrites, nitrates, and lead), along with an air quality analysis based on suspended particles determination and meteorological variables (air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, and rainfall). The results show certain water quality deterioration signs for some habitats, noticing, however that any sampling spot presented lead concentrations as a heavy metal. Meteorological variables contribute with a habitats’ global vision which allows to relate rainfall events with certain physicochemical attributes along with suspended particles measurements. Even if this research outlines a sampling and analysis protocol of abiotic variables for the habitats, a contemporaneous biological monitoring is urgent to evaluate the functionality of the habitats as conservation sites for urban threatened amphibious.

The artificial habitats built in the urban area of the city of Cuenca, is the first attempt to conserve the species Gastrotheca sp, these spaces provide the necessary conditions for the development and protection of this species. However, various processes of natural and anthropic pollution, as well as abrupt changes in environmental conditions, have negatively influenced the adaptation of this species to its new habitat. This problem has generated the need to develop methodologies to characterize the state of artificial habitats. The program of Conservation of Urban Biodiversity, developed by the Environmental Management Commission (CGA), aims to conserve the Marsupial Frog of Azuay (Gastrotheca sp), which is part of the heritage biodiversity of the city of Cuenca. That is why in this work, the abundance of Gastrotheca sp was correlated with the physicochemical parameters of water and environmental conditions in artificial habitats, in the period September - November 2017, with the objective of determining the variables correlated with the adaptability of amphibians. The nitrite parameter and the vegetation cover were the variables that influence the adaptation of the species Gastrotheca sp in artificial habitats.

In the Andean region, research is scarce in all areas of knowledge, especially those related to biodiversity. Modeling the distribution of plant and animal species provides a measure of the potential occupation of species in unexplored areas, either for economic or accessibility reasons, becoming a useful tool for l conservation management. The Paute River Basin, given its national water importance, was the scenario chosen for modeling the potential distribution of the tree species of the botanical genus Polylepis, from the Tropical Andes. For this, data from the agency WorldClim -General Circulation Models was used, which contains necessary information on climate models, methods, scenarios and climatic variables that feeds the analysis of future predictionof Polylepisforests; data that was complemented with occurrences of the species in the study area. Once the climatic data and Polylepisobservations were obtained, a Maxent method was used, to build current and future prediction models of the species. The results obtained indicate the behavior of the species in the Rio Paute basin and are preliminary data for a species of great importance, as they will be used to make decisions related to the conservation of natural resources. The resulting distribution maps help to learn more about the behaviour of certain species of the genus Polylepisunder climate change scenario.

(2016) Abad Crespo, Lorena Cristina; Mejía Coronel, Julio Danilo
The city of Cuenca presents high atmospheric pollution values due to a series of factors such as traffic, industrial activity, and urban expansion. Among the main pollutants for the city, particulate matter affects the citizen’s health and fauna and flora development due to their atmospheric interaction and permanence. This research study identifies an empirical equation to estimate particulate matter lessthan 10 micrometers in diameter (PM10) concentrations through correlations between in situ measurements of this pollutant with values derived from Cuenca’s urban area Landsat 8 satellite imagery. A multiple linear regression model is generated applying top of the atmosphere reflectance (TOA) and digital numbers (DN), which gives a multiple determination coefficient R2 of 0.55 and a p-value of 0.002, acceptable values according to literature. A PM10 distribution map is produced that allows the estimation of the pollutant’s concentration in places where the monitoring network has no coverage. To conclude, unlike the revised literature, the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) doesn’t present significant results for Cuenca, therefore working with TOA values. In addition, including thermal bands in the models improves substantially the correlation coefficient. However, there are certain locations where estimated PM10 values overpasses the average range, for which an in situ validation is suggested in the spots in question.
