Abstract: | Background: Caesarean section is the obstetric surgery most done in the world to reduce morbidity as well as neonatal, perinatal, and maternal mortality, in circumstances that make vaginal delivery difficult or in emergency pregnancy termination. According to WHO the rate of cesarean deliveries has consistently increased worldwide over the past 50 years (1).
Objective: To determine the prevalence and causes of cesarean section at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, in the period July-December 2014.
Methodology: A descriptive, retrospective and quantitative research was performed. The universe was formed with the medical records of pregnant patients who completed their gestation by caesarean section at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital during July to December 2014. The information was collected on forms. The data was processed using the SPSS program through absolute frequency and percentages, which were represented in tables.
Results: The prevalence of caesarean section is 37.1%. Most of them were patients aged 20-29 years with 53.6%. Primiparous women make a 3.3%, 68.6% had no history of vaginal deliveries and 6.6% had previous abortions. The 56.3% went to 5 or more prenatal visits, 6.6% had a hypertensive disorder, there was hemorrhage in 3.7% of the cases, 3.7% had threatened abortion and 9.6% premature membrane rupture. 75.2% were emergency cesarean sections and the frequently identified causes are previous cesarean section with 42.9% and risk associated with the commitment of fetal well being with 14.8%.
Conclusions: The prevalence of Caesarean section is high in our local territory; it is necessary to promote prenatal care to identify conditions that determine the performance of these |
