Prevalencia de suicidio y factores de riesgo en pacientes que acudieron al Hospital Homero Castanier Crespo - Ciudad de Azogues - período 2010-2012

Abstract

Objective: Determine the prevalence of suicide and risk factors, in hospitalized patients in the Hospital Homero Castanier Crespo of Azogues city, during the period 2010 – 2012.

Materials and Methods: Is a descriptive quantitative transversal – retrospective type investigation, the universe constituted 172 patients with diagnosis of suicide attempt, at both the entire universe was formed the sample; the information were obtained from medical records registered in statistics, are tabulated with software Microsoft Excel 2007 and SPSS version 15; presenting through graphs and tables; for analysis was used chi square test, 95% confidence interval, prevalence ratio and p value.

Results: A total of 172 patients; the prevalence rate was 6,9 cases/1.000 habitants. The 59% were female and 41 % male; the average age: 23 years for women, 32 years in men; by occupation, employees 41% and 4% unemployed; by time of year, July and September with 20 cases respectively, May was the month with less cases with 8; the method most used was poisons and pesticides with 80 %; the rate of suicide attempted in 2012 decreased by 21% with respect to 2010. Conclusions: Of 172 patients: 50% of suicide attempts were impulsive; the age group 10-20 years was the most affected with 49%; the use of poisons and pesticides established in 80% of cases, also if pertain to female presents a risk 2/1 that the type of suicide attempted is impulsive type.
