| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Background: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the main obstetric complications; according to the World Health Organization (WHO) it is the cause of 25–30% of maternal mortality; Although the triggers are diverse, it can be prevented and treated in a timely and effective manner with protocols established by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of Ecuador. Objective: To determine the frequency, method of termination of labor and mortality in patients with postpartum haemorrhage who were treated at the José Carrasco Arteaga Specialty Hospital, during the period January-December 2019. Methodological design: Descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study with data from the period January-December 2019 of all deliveries via vaginal or cesarean section that presented PPH at the “José Carrasco Arteaga” Specialty Hospital in the city of Cuenca; records were obtained from the AS400 system obstetrics database; The data were transcribed into a database designed in the statistical software SPSS, version 25, where the results were also processed by constructing tables of frequencies and percentages, both simple and contingency with the crossing of variables.. Results: PPH had a frequency of 8.1%. 81.1% are between the ages of 19–35 years; 71.1% reside in urban areas; 74.5% live with a partner, 37.8% in a common-law union and 36.7% married; 41.1% have a secondary education level; 56.7% are overweight. The mean hemoglobin before delivery was 12.91.3 g/dL and 9.31.8 g/dL after delivery; the average amount of bleeding was 1,023.3494.8 ml. 47.8% had no previous deliveries, 11.1% reported a previous cesarean section; 18.9% had a previous abortion. 37.8% had a previous pregnancy and 25.6% were primiparous. 92.2% had 37 or more gestational weeks; 15.6% reported previous anemia and 18.9% hypertension. 66.7% had childbirth as the termination route and 33.3% ended in cesarean section; 46.7% had driving. 71.1% registered uterine atony and 100.0% advanced to recovery. 66.7% received transfusions to attend PPH. Conclusions: Although in general the mortality rate from PPH has been low or significantly reduced, it is still a public health problem | en_US |
